CITY OF AKRON CANS FOR CA$H

IMAGE:Cans 4 Cash LogoRecently, the City of Akron PeaceMakers, Mayor Don Plusquellic’s civic/anti-crime youth program, accepted the U.S. Conference of Mayor’s Cash for Cans City Recycling Challenge.

The 85 member group is taking the lead in encouraging residents, organizations and businesses in Akron to BE GREEN and to recycle. The teens, representing every high school in the city, are hoping to receive one of three top prizes ($25,000, $15,000 or $5,000) to provide a summer camp for elementary and middle school children and for uniforms.

The program will run April 1 through April 28 and involves the collection and counting of aluminum cans within the city of Akron. The process is simple. Here's how it works:

  • Residents are encouraged to place cans in their blue City of Akron recycle bins. Nothing else is required.
  • Businesses that currently have a recycle program and a recycle company picks up your material; all you have to do is contact your recycler and ask for documentation of the aluminum cans collected in the month of April. Then send that documentation to Billy Soule, Assistant to the Mayor for Community Relations for use in the city’s overall count.
  • For businesses that do not have a recycle program and would like to participate, you may email Billy Soule, Assistant to the Mayor for Community Relations, or telephone at (330) 375-2660 to arrange for pick up.
  • Others without recycle programs may drop off cans at City of Akron fire stations or community centers. - Drop-Off Locations (116k pdf)

During the month of April, the PeaceMakers team will be collecting cans from their schoolmates, neighbors and from small to medium businesses throughout the city. We hope to gain your cooperation in making Akron a cleaner, greener community. Please help these young people win one of the cash prizes offered by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and NOVELIS so they can continue to service Akron through their volunteer efforts. Last year, the Akron PeaceMakers gave more than 3,000 volunteer hours to the city and local organizations.

Note: Businesses, if you have a recycling program, go ahead and give your cans to your recycler. All we need is the documentation of the number of cans/poundage. That’s all there is to it!
